It is very important to acclimate inverts to temperature, pH, & salinity.

Temperature / pH and Salinity Acclimation:  Shipping is a stressful experience. Treating your new inverts with TLC for the first few days will help insure long-term success. The method described in our video above will allow this process to occur slowly, over a period of 1-2 hours, which provides the best results for success.   If you prefer, you can use the drip method as described below- however aeration is necessary to make sure the new animals have sufficient oxygen in the water to sustain life.

****SPONGES: IMPORTANT NOTE******

Sponges should never be directly exposed to air. Follow the normal coral acclimation procedures for temperature, but once acclimated to the temperature, submerge the bag underwater in the aquarium and remove the sponge from the bag under water. Never let the sponge be exposed to air.

****TURBO SNAILS: IMPORTANT NOTE******

If you have received turbo/astrea snails for the first time- remember- they can not right themselves-if they land upside down at anytime in the tank, they are not able to turn themselves over. Make sure to situate them so they can move, otherwise they will die. It is strongly recommended to avoid adding the transport water into the tank. Use a net to transport the animal without water into the tank after acclimation.., avoiding adding the old water.

How to do Drip Acclimation?

Airline tubing is necessary to properly drip acclimate your new saltwater friends.  Steps for Drip Acclimation:

  • 1. Tie the tubing into a knot or use a rubber band to pinch a portion of the tubing shut to control the speed of the drip ~6 from the top of the tubing.
  • 2. With the tubing in the tank and the cinched area situated close to the tank began a siphon by gently sucking on the other end of the airline tubing, drawing the water out of the tank & into the container with the new animals. The rate at which the water is flowing should be a slow drip.
  • 3. Allow the drip process to continue while monitoring until you have tripled the amount of water in the container with your own water (this process should take about 2 hours), your new friends are ready to be added to the tank.
